The 1901 American Standard Version (ASV) comes from the 1885 English Revised Version (ERV). While the ASV is one of the most literal translations, it did try to be somewhat reader-friendly... at least in the early 1900s. More importantly for today, multiple newer translations like the 1995 New American Standard Bible (NASB), updated in 2020, took their cues from the ASV.
